All of my work is created by hand using glass fusing tools. I do not mass product anything so there will always be variances in similar pieces. I can “recreate” items, but it will not be an exact duplicate.
The glass that I use is manufactured by Bullseye Glass, hand made in Portland, Oregon. It is a fascinating process to watch in person, but the link provided is a good substitute. The glass comes in multiple forms, sheet glass, rods and stringers and Frit (crushed glass). And my designs leverage use of all these at various times.
Each piece can take hours of cutting, assembly and preparation before going into the kiln. It can be fused multiple times, depending on the final look desired with each firing taking over 12 hours, sometimes longer. Firings can be anywhere from 1200 Degrees to 1500 Degrees, depending on the look desired and thickness of the glass. I have even made a piece that required almost 2 days in the kiln! During each required firing the glass is annealed to ensure strength and durability. My Kilns (yes, I have a few) have digital controllers to ensure the correct temperatures are reached and maintained during each firing.
I love using Enamels and clear glass to make unique glass sheets that I that make wonderful components to larger pieces or stand on their own as jewelry pieces. My current Enamel preference is Rogue Enamels, and I’m also using EZ Fire as well. And most recently, I have become enthralled with making glass ocean waves and the mystery of how the waves ebb and flow in the glass .
And recently, I have discovered the fun of using my fused glass components with Sterling Silver components to make necklaces and earrings, where the sparkle and color of my glass cabachons bring the jewelry to life.
All of this is done in my small home studio - its compact, but quite comfortable and everything I need is in reach. Below are some images of when it was actually neat and clean! clean or messy, its the perfect place to create…..
